Evidence-based electrical stimulation as part of a comprehensive
physiotherapy treatment plan for pain management and tissue repair.
Electrotherapy harnesses the therapeutic properties of electrical currents to reduce pain, accelerate tissue healing, and restore muscle function. By delivering precise electrical stimulation to targeted nerves, muscles, and tendons, electrotherapy modulates pain signals and promotes recovery.

Electrical stimulation activates sensory nerve fibers, which inhibit the transmission of pain signals from smaller pain fibers. This effectively "closes the gate" on pain perception at the spinal cord level.
Certain frequencies of electrical stimulation trigger the release of endorphins and enkephalins (your body's natural painkillers), providing pain relief that extends beyond the treatment area.
Electrical muscle stimulation creates rhythmic contractions that pump blood through tissues, delivering oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste products that contribute to pain and delayed healing
Electrical stimulation can activate muscles that are inhibited due to pain or injury, helping restore normal motor patterns and prevent compensatory dysfunction
High-frequency, low-intensity stimulation primarily for pain relief through gate control mechanisms
Stimulation that causes muscle contractions, used for strengthening, preventing atrophy, and improving motor control.
Medium-frequency current that penetrates deeper tissues, effective for pain relief and reducing inflammation
Targeted stimulation to re-educate specific muscles and improve voluntary control.Your physiotherapist selects the appropriate modality, electrode placement, frequency, and intensity based on your specific presentation and treatment goals
Your physiotherapist will identify the optimal electrode positions based on your pain location, nerve pathways, and treatment objectives. Adhesive electrode pads are applied to clean, dry skin
Electrotherapy is often applied while you perform exercises, receive manual therapy, or as a standalone intervention, depending on your treatment plan
Using a specialized electrotherapy device, your physiotherapist adjusts:
You'll feel a comfortable tingling, buzzing, or muscle contraction sensation (depending on the modality used). The intensity is always controlled and should never be painful. Many clients find it deeply relaxing
Inform your physiotherapist if you have known adhesive allergies. Hypoallergenic electrode options are available.
Arrive with clean skin in the treatment area. Avoid applying lotions or oils before your appointment, as they interfere with electrode adhesion.
Obtain pre-approval from your adjuster before beginning treatment.
Electrotherapy is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects. You may experience:
Rest and apply gentle heat to the area. Any discomfort should resolve within a few hours
If you experience skin irritation that persists beyond a few hours, increased pain, or any unexpected reactions.
Electrotherapy is included as part of your physiotherapy session. To book, select "Clinical Physiotherapy" from our online platform.
All treatment modalities, including multiple electrotherapy techniques, equipment use, and professional expertise, are included in your session fee. No add-on charges.
Direct billing is available for most extended health plans.
Electrotherapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses electrical signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain. It effectively slows down or distracts the message from the nerve to the brain and stimulates blood circulation to improve healing. Electrotherapy also helps release endorphins that naturally decrease pain in the body.
During your session, your physiotherapist will place electrode pads on your skin with adhesive. These pads will connect to a battery-powered device held by your therapist that will determine frequency and intensity. The pads then transmit electrical signals to your body, helping to relieve pain.
Some patients may have allergic reactions to the adhesive used on the electrode pads. Be sure to tell your physiotherapist about any allergies before your session. Whenever starting a new physiotherapy program, bring a list of any medications to your first appointment, along with any relevant X-rays and MRIs. If you’re experiencing pain symptoms before your electrotherapy Vancouver session, make a note of them and be sure to tell your therapist ahead of time. If you are involved in an accident claim with ICBC, be sure to get treatment approval before your sessions begin.
Electrotherapy is generally a pain-free process, but if you do feel sore or achy afterwards it’s important to rest and apply a hot compress to the area.
