Electrotherapy Vancouver

Evidence-based electrical stimulation as part of a comprehensive
physiotherapy treatment plan for pain management and tissue repair.

Advanced Pain Modulation Through Electrical Stimulation

Electrotherapy harnesses the therapeutic properties of electrical currents to reduce pain, accelerate tissue healing, and restore muscle function. By delivering precise electrical stimulation to targeted nerves, muscles, and tendons, electrotherapy modulates pain signals and promotes recovery.

At VanCity Physio, electrotherapy is never used in isolation. It's strategically integrated with exercise therapy, manual treatment, and movement rehabilitation to create comprehensive treatment protocols. Our Vancouver physiotherapists use multiple electrotherapy modalities based on your specific condition and treatment goals.

Conditions Electrotherapy Address

Electrotherapy is particularly effective for:

Pain conditions

  • Nerve-related pain
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Post-surgical pain management
  • Acute injury pain

Sensory disturbances

  • Numbness and tingling
  • Burning sensations
  • Nerve compression symptoms

Muscle dysfunction

  • Muscle weakness and atrophy prevention
  • Post-injury muscle re-education
  • Motor control deficits

Tissue healing

  • Improved circulation
  • Enhanced wound repair
  • Enhanced wound repair

The Science Behind Electrotherapy

Pain gate control

Electrical stimulation activates sensory nerve fibers, which inhibit the transmission of pain signals from smaller pain fibers. This effectively "closes the gate" on pain perception at the spinal cord level.

Endogenous opioid release

Certain frequencies of electrical stimulation trigger the release of endorphins and enkephalins (your body's natural painkillers), providing pain relief that extends beyond the treatment area.

Improved circulation

Electrical muscle stimulation creates rhythmic contractions that pump blood through tissues, delivering oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste products that contribute to pain and delayed healing

Neuromuscular re-education

Electrical stimulation can activate muscles that are inhibited due to pain or injury, helping restore normal motor patterns and prevent compensatory dysfunction

Electrotherapy Modalities We Use

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

High-frequency, low-intensity stimulation primarily for pain relief through gate control mechanisms

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)

Stimulation that causes muscle contractions, used for strengthening, preventing atrophy, and improving motor control.

IFC (Interferential Current)

Medium-frequency current that penetrates deeper tissues, effective for pain relief and reducing inflammation

NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation)

Targeted stimulation to re-educate specific muscles and improve voluntary control.Your physiotherapist selects the appropriate modality, electrode placement, frequency, and intensity based on your specific presentation and treatment goals

Electrotherapy Modalities We Use

Assessment and electrode placement

Your physiotherapist will identify the optimal electrode positions based on your pain location, nerve pathways, and treatment objectives. Adhesive electrode pads are applied to clean, dry skin

Integration with other treatments

Electrotherapy is often applied while you perform exercises, receive manual therapy, or as a standalone intervention, depending on your treatment plan

Parameter selection:

Using a specialized electrotherapy device, your physiotherapist adjusts:

  • Current intensity (you control comfort level)
  • Frequency (Hz) for specific therapeutic effects
  • Treatment duration (typically 15-30 minutes)
  • Waveform type based on condition

During treatment

You'll feel a comfortable tingling, buzzing, or muscle contraction sensation (depending on the modality used). The intensity is always controlled and should never be painful. Many clients find it deeply relaxing

Preparing for Your Electrotherapy Session

Allergy considerations:

Inform your physiotherapist if you have known adhesive allergies. Hypoallergenic electrode options are available.

Skin preparation:

Arrive with clean skin in the treatment area. Avoid applying lotions or oils before your appointment, as they interfere with electrode adhesion.

For ICBC claimants:

Obtain pre-approval from your adjuster before beginning treatment.

What to bring:
  • Current medication list
  • Imaging results (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound)
  • Documentation of symptoms and pain patterns

Post-Treatment Care

Electrotherapy is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects. You may experience:

If you experience soreness:

Rest and apply gentle heat to the area. Any discomfort should resolve within a few hours

When to contact your physiotherapist:

If you experience skin irritation that persists beyond a few hours, increased pain, or any unexpected reactions.

Normal responses:
  • Mild redness at electrode sites (temporary)
  • Slight muscle fatigue if using muscle stimulation
  • Immediate or gradual pain relief

Electrotherapy in Vancouver: VanCity Physio Success Stories
VanCity Physio's vast knowledge brought me great results. When I began working with them I was on crutches, and today I am so much stronger and can function so much better. I feel that I have jumped leaps and bounds, and I am very excited to utilize my new knowledge.

My therapist put a great deal of time and effort into my rehabilitation, and gave me the tools I needed to move onward and forward.

I saw Ranko for my first physio visit. I am a dentist and experience tightness in my neck and shoulders a lot. Ranko did a thorough assessment and recommended the proper treatment best suited for my needs.

My body felt so relaxed and relieved after my visit with Ranko. He gave me suggestions on how I can best prevent further injuries due to my work. Since them I have noticed huge improvements in my range of motion and less discomfort in my head and shoulders.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrotherapy

HOW IT WORKS

Electrotherapy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses electrical signals to interfere with the transmission of neural pain signals into the brain. It effectively slows down or distracts the message from the nerve to the brain and stimulates blood circulation to improve healing. Electrotherapy also helps release endorphins that naturally decrease pain in the body.

WHAT TO EXPECT

During your session, your physiotherapist will place electrode pads on your skin with adhesive. These pads will connect to a battery-powered device held by your therapist that will determine frequency and intensity. The pads then transmit electrical signals to your body, helping to relieve pain.

HOW TO PREPARE

Some patients may have allergic reactions to the adhesive used on the electrode pads. Be sure to tell your physiotherapist about any allergies before your session. Whenever starting a new physiotherapy program, bring a list of any medications to your first appointment, along with any relevant X-rays and MRIs. If you’re experiencing pain symptoms before your electrotherapy Vancouver session, make a note of them and be sure to tell your therapist ahead of time. If you are involved in an accident claim with ICBC, be sure to get treatment approval before your sessions begin.

POST-SESSION

Electrotherapy is generally a pain-free process, but if you do feel sore or achy afterwards it’s important to rest and apply a hot compress to the area.
