Concussion Physio Vancouver

Evidence-based treatment for traumatic brain injuries and post-concussion
syndrome for complete recovery.

Expert Treatment for Concussion Recover

Concussions disrupt normal brain function and are most commonly gained from sports collisions, motor vehicle accidents, or falls. While many individuals recover within 2-3 weeks, others develop persistent symptoms requiring specialized intervention.

At VanCity Physio's Vancouver concussion clinic, our physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and treatment of concussion-related symptoms, including post-concussion syndrome. We use targeted protocols to address the relationship between neurological, vestibular, cervical, and visual systems affected by brain injury.

Our concussion physio services support:
  • Athletes returning to sport
  • Motor vehicle accident
    claimants (ICBC)
  • WorkSafeBC clients with
    workplace head injuries
  • Anyone experiencing prolonged concussion symptoms

  • Note which activities worsen or improve symptoms
  • Bring any imaging results or physician reports
  • For ICBC claims: obtain treatment pre-approval from your adjuster

Immediately post-injury:

  • Rest your brain. Limit screen time, reading, and stimulating environment
  • Avoid alcohol and minimize caffeine
  • Stay well-hydrated
  • Get adequate sleep in a dark, quiet room
  • Avoid activities that risk re-injury

Concussion Treatment & Recovery FAQs

HOW IT WORKS

Our physiotherapists can help you recover from concussion symptoms by strengthening your neck muscles through various vestibular exercises and stretching. We will also work on vision, balance, and spine therapy testing to ensure your body is supported on its way to recovery. Manual therapy will ensure the joints are moving well and myofascial release techniques may also be used to ensure good mobility of the surrounding soft tissue. All treatment plans will be tailored to the individual depending on the severity and scope of the condition.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your treatment will begin with an in-depth assessment of your concussion and related symptoms. Once the root issue is determined, our physiotherapists will create a recovery program tailored to your needs. Treatment may include manual therapy, Myofascial release, balance assessment and training, ocular reflex training, exercise therapy, and more.

HOW TO PREPARE

Depending on the severity and cause of your concussion, you may want to begin treatment right away. Talk to your physiotherapist about your injury and they can help you create an action plan for recovery. If your concussion was a result of a car accident, you should get all necessary ICBC approval before beginning your sessions. Immediately after your injury, rest your brain and avoid high-stimulation activities. Drink lots of water, rest, and give your brain time to recover.

POST-SESSION

You may feel some dizziness directly after your concussion therapy session. This is normal and should not concern you. If symptoms persist, contact your physiotherapist or doctor for advice.
