TMJ Physiotherapy
Vancouver

Specialized treatment and care for jaw pain, dysfunction,
and related symptoms.

Expert Management of Temporomandibular Disorders

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the body's most complex and frequently used joints, opening and closing thousands of times daily during speaking, eating, swallowing, and breathing. When this intricate system becomes dysfunctional, the impact extends far beyond jaw pain, affecting your ability to eat, communicate, sleep, and function comfortably

TMJ disorders (temporomandibular disorders or TMD) encompass a range of conditions affecting the jaw joint, surrounding muscles, and associated structures. At VanCity Physio, our Vancouver physiotherapists have specialized training in the assessment and treatment of TMJ disorders, using hands-on techniques, exercise prescription, and patient education to restore normal jaw function and eliminate pain.
Unlike dental interventions that focus primarily on bite alignment, physiotherapy addresses the musculoskeletal components of TMJ dysfunction including joint mechanics, muscle tension, postural contributions, and movement patterns. Many TMJ disorders are successfully managed with physiotherapy, avoiding the need for invasive interventions.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMJ Physiotherapy

HOW IT WORKS

If your TMJ symptoms are caused by joint stiffness, often linked to past trauma or restricted movement, TMJ physiotherapy Vancouver can help restore proper function. Our physiotherapists use hands-on manual therapy techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce tension. You will also be guided through specific stretches to maintain progress between sessions. This approach can help reduce muscle spasms, improve stability in hypermobile joints, relieve pain, and address TMJ dysfunction. Additional treatments such as laser therapy or ultrasound may also be used depending on your needs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

With TMJ physiotherapy Vancouver, your first step is a detailed assessment to understand the root cause of your symptoms. From there, your physiotherapist will create a personalized treatment plan to support your recovery. Treatment may include manual therapy, myofascial release, IMS, acupuncture, and targeted stretching exercises. Each session is designed to improve movement, reduce discomfort, and support long-term jaw function using modern physiotherapy techniques.

HOW TO PREPARE

Before starting TMJ physiotherapy Vancouver, it helps to come prepared for your first appointment. Bring a list of any medications you are taking, along with relevant imaging such as X-rays or MRIs if available. Take note of your symptoms, including when they occur and what makes them worse or better, so you can share this with your physiotherapist. If your treatment is related to an ICBC claim, be sure to have approval in place before your visit.

Masks are manditory for in-person treatment, in compliance with BC's mask mandate. Please read our Covid-19 procedures for more information.

POST-SESSION

After your TMJ physiotherapy Vancouver session, you will receive personalized guidance based on your condition.
