GLA:D® Program
for Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis

GLA:D® Canada is an evidence-based education and exercise program designed specificallyfor people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. It was developed from research in Denmark and isnow offered across Canada by certified healthcare professionals.

Research shows that people who complete GLA:D® often experience:

Who Is This Program For?

GLA:D® is appropriate for adults experiencing:

  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Pain with walking, stairs, squatting, or standing up from a chair
  • Symptoms related to osteoarthritis
  • Early to advanced hip or knee OA
  • Those wanting to avoid or delay surgery
  • Those preparing for surgery or recovering function afterward
You do not need imaging or a physician referral to participate.

What’s Included

Initial Physiotherapy Assessment

Before starting the program, you’ll meet one-on-one with your
physiotherapist for acomprehensive assessment.

This includes:
  • Review of your symptoms and goals
  • Strength and mobility assessment
  • Functional testing
  • Discussion about whether GLA:D® is the right fit for you

Education Sessions

You’ll take part in two guided education sessions focused on
understanding osteoarthritis and how to manage it effectively.

Topics include:
  • What osteoarthritis actually is (and what it is not)
  • Why exercise is one of the best treatments for OA
  • Pain and flare-up management
  • How to stay active safely
  • Long-term strategies for joint health and self-management

Group Exercise Sessions

You’ll complete 12 supervised exercise sessions, twice per week for 6 weeks.

Each session is approximately 50 minutes and includes individualized exercises tailored to yourability level.

Exercises focus on:
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Functional movement
  • Confidence with everyday activities
All exercises can be modified based on pain level, mobility, and experience.

Post-Program Reassessment

At the end of the program, you’ll complete a follow-up reassessment to measure your progress.

We’ll review changes in:
  • Pain
  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Function
  • Confidence with activity
You’ll also leave with a plan for how to continue your exercises independently moving forward.

Led By Ellen Wang

This program is led by a registered physiotherapist and PhD candidate with expertise in
arthritis care and evidence-based rehabilitation.

Participants will receive individualized guidance in a supportive small-group environment
focused on helping you move with greater confidence and less pain.
