Post-Surgery
Physiotherapy Vancouver

Evidence-based post-operative rehabilitation care in Vancouver for complete
recovery after surgery.

Specialized Post-Operative Rehabilitation

At VanCity Physio, physiotherapy after surgery accelerates healing, restores function, and prevents complications following orthopedic surgery. Our physiotherapists have extensive experience in post-surgical protocols to ensure safe, effective progression through each phase of your recovery.

Surgery addresses the structural problem, but physiotherapy rebuilds the functional capacity needed to return to your activities, work, and sport. Without proper rehabilitation, surgical repairs can be compromised by scar tissue formation, compensatory movement patterns, and muscle atrophy.

Our post-surgery physiotherapy program in Vancouver is protocol-driven yet individually tailored. We follow evidence-based timelines while adjusting intensity and progression based on your tissue healing, pain levels, and functional goals.

Pre-surgical physiotherapy (prehabilitation)

When possible, beginning physiotherapy before surgery significantly improves outcomes. Prehabilitation builds strength, improves range of motion, reduces anxiety, and educates you on what to expect post-operatively.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation Treatment Modalities

Your post-operative program will include

Manual therapy

Gentle joint mobilizations, soft tissue work, and scar tissue massage to restore mobility and reduce restrictions

Therapeutic exercise

Progressive exercises that rebuild strength, endurance, and power while respecting tissue healing timelines

Neuromuscular re-education

Balance work and movement pattern correction to restore motor control

Gait training

Restoring normal walking mechanics and weaning from assistive devices when appropriate

Modalities

Ice, compression, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound to manage pain and inflammation when indicated

Education

Understanding surgical precautions, recognizing warning signs, managing pain, and progressing your home program.

Collaborative Care Model for Post-Surgery Physiotherapy

Post-operative rehabilitation requires coordination between multiple healthcare providers. We communicate directly with your surgeon and family physician to understand complications, specific protocols or precautions, coordinate pain management, and gain medical clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy

HOW IT WORKS

Post-operative physiotherapy or post-surgery rehabilitation is a crucial process on your road to recovery. It involves a lot of physiotherapy sessions and exercises to help you get better and resume normal physical activities and improve your quality of life. Treatment should begin immediately after surgery and continue until you regain normal function. Post-operative physiotherapy or post-surgery rehabilitation can help reduce anxiety, build confidence, and improve circulator and respiratory problems.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Our physiotherapists will work closely with your medical team to determine the appropriate recovery plan. Physiotherapy in early recovery stages post-surgery will often be gentle and focused on pain relief and reducing swelling. Once you reach the appropriate milestones for your surgery, we will begin to work on strength-building and range of motion training. When your surgery is mostly healed we will recommend more complex exercises to restore full function to the affected area. At-home exercises will also be required to experience the full benefits of the physiotherapy program.

HOW TO PREPARE

Preparation for these services will be determined on an individual basis, depending on the type of severity of the surgery. It’s important to contact your physiotherapist early on in your recovery process to ensure you hit all necessary milestones and recover more quickly. If you have a referral or any paperwork from your surgeon, please bring in a copy for our records. Always follow your doctor’s instructions when undergoing post-operative recovery programs.

POST-SESSION

Depending on the surgery and the state of your injury, your physiotherapist may recommend specific exercises, rest, or activities. Consult your doctor to find out what kind of care you should be focusing on and contact our office to start your recovery journey. Be sure to do all at-home exercises as directed to receive optimal results.
